Answer to Carbon Emissions May Lie Under the Sea By Eli Kintisch ScienceNOW Daily News 14 July 2008 Scientists may have found a way to chemically lock up a trillion metric tons of carbon dioxide, many times the expected global carbon emissions over the next century. The plan involves injecting the greenhouse gas into huge formations of the porous volcanic rock basalt that lie on the sea floor. The approach would be expensive, however, and a host of questions remain about the technique.

Warming Spells Trouble for Fish By Christopher Pala ScienceNOW Daily News 10 July 2008 FORT LAUDERDALE, FLORIDA--Global warming of the oceans will likely cause the extinction by 2050 of dozens of fish species that cannot migrate to colder waters, according to a study presented here yesterday at the 11th International Coral Reef Symposium. "The loss of biodiversity will be considerable, and replacing them with new species would take millions of years," says co-author Daniel Pauly of the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver, Canada.

Bedrohung der Korallen wächst WASHINGTON - Rund ein Drittel aller Riff bildenden Korallenarten sind derzeit in ihrem Bestand gefährdet oder vom Aussterben bedroht. Damit hat sich die bedrohliche Lage der Korallen in den vergangen zehn Jahren deutlich verschärft. Dies berichtet ein internationales Forscherteam nach der Untersuchung von mehr als 700 Korallenarten im Journal «Science» (online vorab). Die Hauptursache für diese Entwicklung sehen die Wissenschaftler in den von Menschen produzierten Treibhausgasen.

Es sei das erste Mal, dass abrupte Klimawechsel am Ende der letzten Eiszeit so genau beschrieben würden, teilt die Universität Bern mit. Die Arbeit der Forscher könnte wegweisend sein für Klimaprognosen.
